A Message from the Chief Roger LeBlanc

Thomas's Drugs FireThis is the part where I summarize the past year into a paragraph or two and highlight the top events of twenty eleven. I could talk about the two fires at Thomas Drugs...or I can talk about the Stanley Cup coming to the fire hall...or the cat that got his head caught in a drain pipe. But I think personally, I will remember twenty eleven as being on the defensive, and for the first time in my career, having to explain to the community that we serve...what it is we do and why it is so important. The struggle to obtain a new fire hall was the highlight and lowlight of the year. The village has about 7,000 residents and the town has about 7,000 residents. Out of 14,000 people 46 of them decided to become members of the East Aurora Fire Department. That's 1 out of 304.

What makes us get up in the middle of the night?...Miss dinners, miss birthday parties and family events to go on a fire call?...Is it the BIG red fire trucks with lights and sirens...Yeah. Is it the thrill of danger...Yeah. Is it the sense of community pride...Yes. Ask yourself...if not you, then who? Our first responders carry the pride of community on their shoulders every day. Residents don't always see the sacrifice's we make to provide our services. Some of our best work is done while everyone is safe at home sleeping. Unaware we are out all night with the wind howelling, blocking streets with downed power lines.

We do what We do because We LOVE IT.

We do IT because We CARE.

We provide a service to individuals on what happens to be the worst day in their lives. Unless they've used our service, they do not know...What we are all about.

Always remember Volunteering builds a better community.
