2002 Annual Report to East Aurora

The East Aurora Volunteer Fire Department operates three engine companies and a ladder tower company with heavy rescue from its Central Fire Station at 576 Oakwood Avenue in the village of East Aurora. The Department is manned by over sixty men and women firefighters who are trained in a broad range of emergency response techniques and procedures.

Lt. Dean Letson and Firefighter Larry Chesbro fight a major structure fire.

During 2002 the Department responded to 196 alarms of fire, 63 vehicle accidents, 221 requests for first aid, 13 incidents for fire police support above the normal responses, 44 other types of emergencies including 2 high angle technical rescues. These latter rescues involved the recovery of trapped and injured dogs from wilderness sites where owners would be at great risk if they undertook the rescues by themselves. These rescues provided the department with excellent opportunities to exercise their skills without placing human patients at risk.

These 537 emergencies required the expending of over 3400 man hours of effort. To prepare for these responses the Department membership expended 782 man hours in Department training, 555 man hours in State Fire and Emergency Training Schools, 2,091 man hours maintaining equipment and apparatus, and other work details, and 634 man hours in meetings. Total of 7,462 man hours is worth as much as $200,000 of donated time and effort...to our community.

2002 FUND DRIVE

In addition to all the training, maintenance, and response effort, each member of the Department actively participates in the Annual Fund Drive. The proceeds are used to pay for supplies, equipment, or apparatus that are not covered through appropriations from the Village or Township. Donations raised by the 2002 Fund Drive were returned to the citizens as set forth below:
- Final payment for Engine 4. Over $110,000.
contributed from money raised by the
Department over the past four years.
- $4,000 Firefighter training and conferences.
- $3,500 Supplies for firefighter rehabilitation at major incidents.
- $6,000 Cost sharing for FEMA Grant.

Federal Emergency Management Agency
(FEMA) Grant

In 2002, the members of the East Aurora Fire Department wrote a proposal to FEMA for funding for an innovative Emergency Management Information System. The proposal was funded for $45,000 to implement a Department internet web site to facilitate communications with the community and with Department members. This web site also is used for fire prevention, and disaster preparedness and response.

Another part of the project developed a Department Operations Information component that greatly improves the firefighters knowledge of a broad range of hazards such as chemical storage, topography, and complex buildings. In addition, a module of this system helps with fire investigation and building inspections and code enforcement.

Your Support is Important
The East Aurora Fire Department is 100% volunteer; men and women from all walks of life and of all ages take the training, wear the turnout equipment, and man the departments four engines, ladder tower, and heavy rescue truck to respond 24/7/365 to any call for assistance from the community. If this were a paid department each engine company of four men would cost the taxpayer over $700,000 per year in salaries. Our department responds an average of four such companies to each structure fire and there are no salaries to be paid. For us to do this we need your full support:
- Become a member of the Department.
- Keep your smoke detectors operational.
- Actively practice Fire Prevention in your
home and business.
-Support the Departments' Annual Fund Drive
